August Challenge: Chains Make Claws

Theme: Character Monologue
Inspiration: The Khajiit of Skyrim
Tone: Soft, sinuous, edged with danger
Voice: Gender-neutral (J’zari or K’zari)

Script

(Campfire crackles softly. Wind stirs through pine trees. A wolf calls in the distance.)

You ask J’zari why I do not sleep in the warm inns.
Why I hide in the trees.
Why I speak to the moons more than to men.

You ask many things. Hm hm. Curiosity is a heavy tail, Stone-foot.

(A breath, quiet thought.)

Once, I belonged to a caravan… spice and silk and silver tongues.
Then I belonged to a cell.
Then to the pit.

Now? Now I belong to nothing.
And nothing belongs to me.
Even the moons give me only half their light.

(Voice lowers, more intimate.)

But I am not broken. No-no. I am sharpened.
The chains made claws.
The silence taught me how to listen.
And the night... ah, the night taught me how to vanish.

(A soft laugh. Amusement, or warning.)

So ask your questions, friend.
But know this — J’zari is free now.

Notes from the Mob

August’s challenge invited members to step into the world of the Khajiit, exploring accent, rhythm, and restraint. Performers experimented with warmth, wit, and a touch of feral mystery — creating voices that felt both ancient and alive.
